  6.     Here's a friendly 2.x Prefs program for your Workbench that will allow
  7.     you to keep a list of your favorite backdrops and have a new one appear
  8.     each time your computer is rebooted.
  9.  
  10.     It was written to be compatiable with NickPrefs and should work with
  11.     other backdrop programs as well.  Backdrops does not display the
  12.     picture itself, it just picks new ones for you.
  13.  
  14.     WARNING: When BDStartup is run it will replace your current palette
  15.     with a new one.  If your palette is not saved somewhere, please do so.
  16.  
  17.     To install, drop the Prefs/Backdrops icon in your Prefs drawer and the
  18.     WBStartup/BDStartup icon in your WBStartup drawer.
  19.  
  20.     Click on the Backdrops icon in your Prefs drawer to add your backdrop
  21.     picture files to its list.  Click on the Save button to save your file
  22.     list.

  24.     A picture file "RandomBackdrop" will be created when you start adding
  25.     files to the list.  Use this file in your backdrop program (that would
  26.     be WBPicture for NickPref users).

  30.                              How it works
  31.                              ------------

  33.     BDStartup will get started up at boot time but will immediately go to
  34.     sleep in the background so it will not effect your time to boot up.
  35.  
  36.     After 2 minuits it will wake up and pick a new backdrop from the list.
  37.     It then copies this picture file to the Random Backdop File (default
  38.     file: "RandomBackdrop").
  39.  
  40.     After the file is copied it updates your WB palette to match that of
  41.     your picture.

  43.     The WBStartup process exits.

  47.                     Notes on Creating Low Color Backdrops
  48.                     -------------------------------------

  50.     Eight color backdrops can be tricky to do but you can get good results.
  51.     Here are a few tips.
  52.  
  53.     A program like The Art Department is essential for creating good
  54.     backdrops.  Load in a picture you'd like to have displayed.  Convert it
  55.     to 8 colors.  Remember to display it in the same resolution as your
  56.     Workbench.  You may want to double the scale in the X direction if it
  57.     is a low res picture.
  58.  
  59.     Does it look okay?  Try adjusting the color and brightness controls if
  60.     you are not satisfied.
  61.  
  62.     If you like it, lock the palette to ensure that it doesn't get changed
  63.     by the program.  You will have to arrange the colors in the palette so
  64.     that it makes a good workbench.

  66.     The WB uses the 8 color pallette like this:

  68.     Color#  Description        Typical brightness
  69.  
  70.     1  Text Backdrop           Should be a light but not glaring color.

  72.     2  Text Pen                Should be black, or very dark.
  73.  
  74.     3  Edge Highlight          Should be white or very light.

  76.     4  Window Active Color     Whatever you think "goes" best with #1.

  82.     7  Menu Item Highlight     I prefer this a dark color.
  83.                                (I use this color for my windows pattern.
  84.                                 I make sure it looks dark against #1.)

  86.     8  Cursor & Text Highlight Anything that can be seen against #7. I
  87.                                prefer this a light color.

  90.     Rearrange the colors in your palette by swapping the colors around
  91.     until they fit the suggestions above.

  93.     Save your 8 color iff file.
  94.  
  95.     Load the file as your backdrop and it's palette too.
  96.  
  97.     Typically color #1 will not be right and will need the most attention.
  98.     Open the palette tool from your Prefs directory and adjust the color to
  99.     your liking from there.

  101.     When you get a nice text backdrop color go back to whatever you were
  102.     using to adjust the palette of the picture and change it there.  If you
  103.     are using good image softare like the Art Department you should
  104.     rerender the image with the new palette.
  105.  
  106.     You will have to balence your colors between the WB and your picture.
  107.     Remember, making the icons and windows easy to read is most important.

  109.     A trick that sometimes works is loading a palette from another WB
  110.     backdrop into a picture you're trying to make Workbenchable.
